Innovation Hive Branding

I. Colors

Since the project was initiated under the University of San Francisco’s Engineering Department and would sit within campus, the branding system had to follow the USF Branding Guidelines. Under this, I developed a system meant to encourage creativity and hands-on participation, crafting a color palette of the secondary colors.

  Innovation Hive Color Palette

USFCA Secondary Color Palette

An interesting challenge in curating the color palette was its accessibility. With one of the project coordinators having color blindness, it was helpdul to hear critical feedback and gain the support. Although this color palette fit the USFCA Brand Guidelines, the primary blue shade had to change due to its conflicts with other colors. With permission moving forward, the shade of blue chosen was used for Hive design.

II. Icons
The icon system was created with accessibility in mind. Simple yet straight-forward symbols were used in icons to be identified on various mediums such as maps, wayfinding material, and safety signage. The highest priority was the communication towards students, staff, and visitors of all demographics. The predominant use of positive space is utilized so that the icons can be highlighted with the color in physical spaces (such as navigational and safety signage.)

II. Woods and Acrylics
The existing interior of the Innovation Hive is predominantly plywood so the use of the bright colors of the color palette shine through this majority.
